On death row, a man is waiting for his last day, knowing full well that there is nothing more to hope for. But for now, he lives. Thinking. Feeling. Remembers ... Victor Hugo, an active opponent of the death penalty, went, for the sake of higher purposes, on a literary hoax - in 1829, he published a short story "The Last Day of the condemned to death" anonymously, under the guise of a true diary of a convict sentenced to capital punishment. A sensational success followed, and after it - it was worth opening the name of the author - the same unprecedented bashing of Hugo in the press ... However, the names of detractors have long been forgotten, and the story still remains one of the strongest works in defense of the inalienable right of man (even a criminal) to life. The collection also includes the play "Ruy Blaz", which belongs to the "romantic" period of Hugo's work.
