Stalin's sudden illness and death in March 1953 came as a complete surprise to many. The tyrant was full of grandiose plans, he was preparing to mount an armed challenge to the newly elected U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower, and at home initiated a brutal campaign against Soviet Jews, after which he intended to purge the ranks of the top leadership of the Communist Party. Now Stalin's longtime "associates" faced many difficult dilemmas, including in the countries of the socialist bloc, where the protest moods were making themselves felt. Bright pages of the book are devoted to the confrontation between Beria, Malenkov, Khrushchev, comparing eyewitness accounts of events with the official published versions. Of particular interest are documents related to international relations, in particular the reaction of the Eisenhower administration and its closest aides to Kremlin initiatives after Stalin's death.
