This collection includes works by Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828–1910), written in his mature years: the novel "Family Happiness"; the novellas "Albert," "The Death of Ivan Ilyich," "Polikushka," "The Devil," "The Counterfeit Coupon," and "Kholstomer"; the short stories "A Marker's Notes" and "After the Ball"; the fairy tale "The Assyrian King Esarhaddon"; and the parable "Three Sons."

From the vantage point of his years and experience, the writer examines various life situations. First love, which passes by chance. Wasted talent. The transformation of feelings and relationships in marriage. Pathological passion, gambling, and alcohol that destroy a person. Some of the works are parable-like. Tolstoy's characters realize that by harming another, they also destroy themselves. That evil begets evil, and good begets good. Before death, they reflect on the years they lived and ask themselves: were they happy?
