Oscar Wilde's novel The Portrait of Dorian Gray is both exquisite and terrifying, the story of a man who ruins his soul for the sake of unfading beauty. Young Dorian's moral decline is reflected only in his portrait - but nothing can last forever... For true Beauty cannot be immoral, and Vice is never truly beautiful.
In the pages of his only completed novel, the Grand Master of Paradoxes has woven an elegant and epathetic web of contradictions - and has had the world talking about him for a century. Over the years, the beautiful Dorian has been the subject of more than 30 screen adaptations, radio plays, plays, musicals and even a name for mental illness - oh, his literary father would surely be pleased. The mesmerizing chain of black-and-white illustrations, created by Moscow artist Andrei Simanchuk, are filled with enigmatic symbols and mystical allusions. Don't be surprised if behind Sir Henry's flawless appearance you suddenly recognize a strangely familiar face with a haughty look beneath sarcastically arched eyebrows. You must have met this character, but his name was different: Mephistopheles, Woland, or something else....
