"Memory of Azov" is the first cruiser of the Russian Imperial Navy, the design of which was based not on English prototypes, but on French ones. In 1885, the French were able to create a project for a high-speed armored deck cruiser! And in Russia they thought that they could create a high-speed, only armored and better armed cruiser of the same dimensions!
The reality turned out to be somewhat different. Not only was the built cruiser unable to develop the declared 17 knots, the irony of fate was that the "armored" and better armament of the ship were achieved at the cost of overloading - just by the sum of the weight of its vertical armor and 8-inch armament...
The mysteries of the design, the difficulties in construction, the rise and fall of the service career of the ship are the subject of a book by the famous naval historian R. M. Melnikov.
The publication is richly illustrated with diagrams, drawings and photographs from state and private collections.
