The history of Russia's emergence as an empire and the dominance of nationalist discourse in it is clearly reflected in the policy that the country pursued with regard to its "peripheries". Among them are the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, called in the official nomenclature of the nineteenth century the Northwest Territory. The state ideology, which created an image of these territories as originally Russian, trapped itself in a "discursive trap": the ethno-cultural reality of the region was different. Darius Staliunas's book analyzes the national policy towards each of the most numerous ethnic groups of this region - Belarusians, Lithuanians, Jews and Poles. His study shows that in Lithuania most of the measures aimed at "russification," "correction," "merger," or "rapprochement" of the non-Russian population were either unsuccessful, or led to quite different consequences than the authorities had hoped for. The reasons for these failures were primarily related to the prevailing ideological stereotypes that prevented the authorities from seeing the complex configuration of social reality. Darius Staliūnas is a leading researcher at the Institute of Lithuanian History.
