The first few days after their return to Beldingsville were not easy for either Mrs. Chilton or Pollyanna. After the free management of one's own time, it was not easy to get used to the fact that there was always some other urgent task to be attended to. In addition, friends and neighbors dropped in every now and then. Jimmy Pendleton Pollyanna saw several times in that first month. At first he had come with John Pendleton, and they had all been rather prim and proper-not at first, however, but only after Aunt Polly had entered the room. Then Jimmy came alone - once with flowers, once with a book for Aunt Polly, twice without any excuse. Pollyanna always greeted him with genuine joy. To most of her friends and acquaintances Pollyanna said little or nothing about the change in Aunt Polly's financial condition. With Jimmy, however, she was quite frank, and her perpetual lament was, "If I could only make money!"
