Martin Lipset is one of the leading political sociologists in the United States. He is world-famous for his work in comparative political science and the sociology of democracy, his theory of the relationship between the level of economic development and democracy, which, among other things, laid the foundations for modernization theory. Political Man is a classic and one of the most cited works on political sociology, translated into 20 languages. The central theme of the book is the social foundations of democracy and authoritarianism (including various forms of fascism) - it is studied not only using politics and elections as an example, but also in relation to the case of "private government" - trade unions. A separate chapter is devoted to the role of intellectuals in a democratic society.
