This collection of poems by Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977) includes both well-known and newly published works, written in Europe and America between 1918 and 1947. Recently deciphered and newly discovered in the writer's archives, these poems, including "The Legend of the Moon" (1920), "Electricity" (1920), "In the Wild North" (1920), and "Olympicum" (1921), significantly expand the Russian portion of his bilingual poetic legacy and reveal unknown aspects of his creative development. The poetry of this celebrated author of "Lolita" and "Ada" reveals the sources and preconditions for the distinctiveness of his prose: subtle psychologism, picturesque visuality of descriptions, precise observations, a distinctive "mirrored" style, and a combination of fiction and autobiography. The poems "Two" (1919), "The Legend of the Moon," "Electricity," and "In the Wild North" are published for the first time; the text of Nabokov's most significant early poem, "Sun Dream" (1923), is re-verified against the manuscript. The Appendix features another recent archival find, "Superman's Lament" (1942), Nabokov's original interpretation of the American comic book hero. The publication is supplemented with commentary and illustrations.
