Soon after the publication in 1863 of the novel "Five Weeks in a Balloon", whose heroes crossed the African continent, Jules Verne sat down for a new work. In it, the brave pioneers had to fight again with dangers and perform incredible feats, discovering the unknown. This time the writer decided to send new heroes to the North Pole. Instead of the hot expanses of Africa, they were waiting for them vast lifeless northern ice fields. Such a choice of Jules Verne was natural. Interest of reading public to the North Pole in the middle of XIX century was understandable, because at that time this place for researchers of our planet was a kind of "white spot". German scientist Peterman supposed that in the area of the North Pole there is a water area free from ice. There were other assumptions, what awaits the discoverers in this point of the planet. That is why the volcano described by Verne, operating surrounded by ice, was perceived by readers as a possible assumption. After the expeditions of Frederick Cook and Robert Peary, who first reached the North Pole at the beginning of the XX century, such a description seemed already a fiction, but Jules Verne's novels from the series "Extraordinary Voyages" were science fiction and adventure works at the same time. The mutiny of the crew, the explosion of the ship, the attack of polar bears, survival in extreme conditions, unexpected turns of the plot - all this novel attracts readers in our time.
Illustrations in this book are made by a wonderful artist Peter Ivanovich Lugansky. The future artist was born in 1911 in Lugansk province. In Kharkov he graduated from one of the oldest art schools in Ukraine, and then began working in the Leningrad "Uchpedgiz". During the war with Nazi Germany Pyotr Ivanovich had time to draw portraits of his fellow soldiers. After the victory, book design became his main creative endeavor. He cooperated with the magazine "Koster", drew for the publishing houses "Detgiz" and "Lenizdat". Lugansky illustrated "Two Captains" Kaverin, "Amphibian Man" Belyaev, "Treasure Island" and "The Keeper of Ballantrae" Stevenson, "White Chief" Mein Reid. And yet his favorite writer was still Jules Verne. Lugansky's illustrations bribe with their authenticity. After all, in our minds, this is how the jungle or the bluish spurs of mountains on the horizon look. Lugansky is always accurate when depicting the costumes of Jules Verne's heroes or the rigging of 19th century sailing ships. Pyotr Ivanovich always took a very responsible approach to his work. His illustrations for Jules Verne's novels do not age.
