The publication contains materials from the field chancery of Peter the Great’s closest associate, Alexander Danilovich Menshikov (1673-1729), stored in the Scientific and Historical Archive of the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts. The collection includes more than 830 documents — letters, reports and reports received by A.D. Menshikov in 1703-1705. Among his correspondents are outstanding figures of the Petrine era — P.M. and F.M. Apraksin, R.V. and Ya.V. Bryus, F.A. Golovin, G.I. Golovkin, P.P. Shafirov, B.P. Sheremetev. The documents contain information about military actions in Ingria during the first years of the Northern War (1700-1721), the construction and defense of St. Petersburg, as well as the organization of the administration of the conquered territories with a multinational population and their integration into the Russian state. The letters of A. D. Menshikov's correspondents make it possible to identify and analyze the system of formal and informal connections that allowed the former tsar's orderly to become part of the Russian ruling elite.

The book is intended for researchers, teachers, postgraduate and university students, as well as anyone interested in the history of Russia during the time of Peter the Great.
