"The Feat" (1931), Vladimir Nabokov's fourth novel, written in Berlin, is a new take on the classic "novel of educa-tion." Nabokov endows his touching hero with some of his own characteristics and circumstances, while at the same time making him a man far removed from literature. A Cambridge graduate with the flowery name of Martyn Edelweiss, a Russian émigré, dreams of doing something exceptional. He travels around Europe and vainly seeks to apply his abilities. The vague desire that has never left him gradually takes shape, and he decides to undertake a feat similar to the mythical descent into Hades - to cross the boundary of the possible and return to his own Russian childhood.
