The book by the famous Brazilian writer Jorge Amado is dedicated to the difficult struggle of the Brazilian revolutionaries against the fascist dictatorship of Geltúlio Vargas in this country. This work is one of the most outstanding examples of Latin American literature of the 20th century. This novel was highly appreciated by Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara. The book was reprinted in many countries. After the fascist coup in Chile in 1973, on the personal order of Pinochet, the book was banned, and all copies in the country were condemned to be burned. Oddly enough, the book is devoid of any influence from the tradition of Latin American magical realism. The book was translated into Russian at the end of the Stalin era and enjoyed great popularity in the USSR.
