"The True Story of Ah Q" is a small masterpiece of early 20th-century Chinese literature, the first work to fully explore the richness of colloquial Chinese. The novella immediately gained international acclaim and launched Lu Xun's writing into the global spotlight. It has been translated into over thirty languages, was included in the BBC's list of the 100 greatest stories of all time, and has inspired numerous adaptations—dramas, films, and even ballets.

Lu Xun originally wrote this novella under the pseudonym "Ba Ren" (meaning "rude"), and it was first published as a series of short stories in a newspaper supplement. Its particular satirical effect was achieved by the contrast between the protagonist—the impoverished farmhand Ah Q, a man who is completely unheroic, hypocritical, and somewhat foolish, yet claims "spiritual superiority"—and the narrative form characteristic of classical Chinese novels.

This edition of "The True Story of A-Q" features original illustrations by Chinese graphic artist Feng Zikai. In addition to the title story, the book includes selected short stories by Lu Xun.
