This monograph examines the training of Orthodox clergy from 1808 to 1869, examines the complexities of pastoral training in theological schools from the perspective of ideal notions of the priesthood and the demands of the era, and analyzes the origins of this issue in Russia, linked to the period of the 1814 Theological School Charter.

The aim of this work is to identify the development of concepts and ideas regarding the training of pastors for the Church that developed in the first half of the 19th century. This monograph offers the first insight into the church-historical processes in theological schools, taking into account the confessional understanding of the issue by contemporaries. One of the conclusions of the study is that the solution to these problems is directly linked to theological reflection on pastoral ministry and pastoral training.

The monograph is provided with extensive scholarly reference material and includes a number of valuable appendices. This work is intended for specialists in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church and pastoral theology, but will also be of interest to a wide range of readers interested in the history of spiritual education in Russia.
