The world in which programmer David Lizner lives has split in two.
On one side is the highly developed society of the Right: they are free from illness, poverty and doubt, are not required to work, never part with their phones, receive bonuses if they faithfully follow the recommendations of numerous mobile applications, and risk ending up on the sidelines if they stop obeying. Most are happy with this life, although whether they are happy is an open question.
On the other side are the Outcasts; not having come to terms with total technological enslavement and information control, they moved to an island where the Right prefer not to go.
David, however, will have to. He must tell a girl named Eva Montoya that her uncle, a great sociologist, has died, and get his latest scientific work, which threatens to undermine the foundations of the almost ideal world in which David is so comfortable.
However, freedom-loving Eva asks a lot of uncomfortable questions, and gradually David himself begins to wonder. And why, strictly speaking, should he be obliged to humbly adapt to other people's expectations?..
Since the release of his first novels, Laurent Gounelle, a specialist in the psychology of personality development, has firmly entered the top five most popular French writers. He is the author of ten books translated into forty languages, his works are on par with the books of Marc Levy and Guillaume Musso. His new novel, "An Almost Perfect World," is a clear, transparent story about what happens when people surrender their right to choose to the authorities or algorithms for the sake of everyday comfort.
Our life belongs only to us. Only we decide what it will be like in general and in small details. Let us not give up our right to decide for ourselves. And let the new novel by Laurent Gounelle inspire us.
