Demography is not destiny. As Giacomo Casanova said more than two centuries ago, "there is no such thing as fate, we determine our own lives". Today, we determine our lives and the life of society more than ever before. Never before on a global scale have we had so few children per adult: our population is close to stabilizing, although we do not know when and at what rates this will happen, or what will happen afterwards. This stabilization will be the result of billions of private decisions influenced by a multitude of events and policies, and some will be less predictable than others. There are more people moving around the world today than ever before, but we too often see them as a threat rather than a sign of increased freedom. And similarly, we too often bemoan population aging, rather than recognizing it as a consequence of human achievement and adapting to it. The importance of demography is best understood when we see that we have choices, are aware of change, and are not constrained by our attitudes. Narratives about demography have for too long been dominated by pessimism and simplistic, indifferent forms of accounting for human lives. As this fascinating and compelling review shows, we should renew our understanding of demography.
