Pnin (1957), the fourth English-language novel by Vladimir Nabokov, is devoted to the vicissitudes of one of the most defenseless and touching characters in the literature of the XX century. A real Russian intellectual, an excellent scientist, but a eccentric and hapless person, Timofey Pnin, who left Russia after the 1917 revolution, teaches Russian literature at an American university, where he becomes an accidental victim of intrigue and callousness of colleagues. Will he be able this time to escape his cunning creator, who prepared him the fate of a sufferer, forced to bear the blows of fate again and again?
“Pnin” was released shortly after the scandalous “Lolita” and, having received enthusiastic reviews from readers and critics, served as a kind of antithesis to the current idea of “immorality” and “heartlessness” of Nabokov.
This edition of the novel is accompanied by a foreword, notes and a final essay of the translator.
The features of spelling, punctuation and transliteration of the translator are preserved.
