The near future.
Young Inuit Kovan goes seal hunting to undergo initiation like his ancestors. But he fails, and ends up on a huge ice floe that broke away from the mainland, along with a polar bear afflicted with a mysterious disease. University graduate Watanabe Yu goes to sea with the fishermen of his native village. He does not yet know what nightmares his decision will lead to, and he himself is hiding many secrets. Bioengineer Li Shili is working on breeding plant hybrids that can decompose plastic, and achieves amazing, but extremely destructive results. Ralph Gable, a former soldier and now an activist working to save dolphins, makes an emergency landing on a strange lifeless island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, which is not on any map.
And they will all soon encounter something terrible, a new form of life, perfectly adapted to exist on a changed Earth, whose appearance could mean the end for the entire planet.
