A disembodied, genderless consciousness—a guardian angel or a cunning demon? The voice of reason or conscience?—watches every breath of the unsuspecting Julia Klopps from the first moment of her life. This mysterious spirit, unaware of its own origins, cares for the girl, attempts to control her thoughts and actions, and is astonished by her increasingly frequent displays of willfulness as Julia matures, becomes a woman, and appears more complex, capricious, and strange to her ghostly "curator" with each passing day, until finally, she slips away completely.

The debut novel by Hungarian-American writer Susan Taubes (1928–1969), author of "Divorce," was never published in her lifetime: American publishers found it too inconvenient, disconcerting, and disturbing. Thanks to the mediation of Samuel Beckett, who called the book "a work of natural genius," the novel was prepared for publication in France, but never reached the printer due to the author's suicide. First published only in 2023, "Lament for Julie" is published in this collection alongside Taubes's stories—nine dark, grotesque dream-like tales about love and marriage, illness and death, sexuality and madness.
