"The Fifth Seal" is a philosophical and moral, allusion-filled novel about human dignity, nobility and moral choices, set in Budapest, 1944. Fiction and historical reality form a unified narrative framework, into which is skillfully woven a philosophical parable referring to the moralistic medieval stories and parables of Albert Camus. The symbolic meaning of the novel is hidden in its title, which refers to the Revelation of John the Evangelist (chapters 5 and 6), where the Lamb breaks the fifth seal of the sealed book.
On an autumn evening in a small inn, four old friends - a clockmaker, a bookseller, a carpenter, and the owner of the establishment - spend time over a carafe of homemade wine and small talk. Inside the inn there is an illusion of calm and stability, outside its walls there is a curfew and rampant Nilashist terror. The next twenty-four hours would confront all four of them with the most difficult choice they could make, when the only way to preserve their human dignity would be at the cost of their lives.
