An exceptional monument of world literature in its interest and importance, "Letters of Dark Men" is a satire whose arrows know no mercy. As in a mirror, it reflects and smug scholastic theologians with their ridiculous disputations, where the boundless ignorance is exposed, and rampant monks, justifying their debauchery with texts of Holy Scripture, and all sorts of priors, abbots, using for their selfish and low purposes any means - lies, slander, forgery of documents. The significance of the Letters is revealed if we pay attention to the state of Germany at the beginning of the sixteenth century.
The aim of a group of humanists - Ulrich von Gutten, Mole Rubean, Mutian Ruf, Hermann Busch, who anonymously published their work in two parts - was to oppose the ecclesiastical foundations, touching also on economic, political and moral motives in their criticism of the Catholic Church. The publication is addressed to historians and medievists, students of humanities, especially history and cultural studies, as well as to all those interested in European history
