The significance of the Letters is revealed if we pay attention to the state of Germany at the beginning of the sixteenth century.
The aim of a group of humanists - Ulrich von Gutten, Mole Rubean, Mutian Ruf, Hermann Busch, who anonymously published their work in two parts - was to oppose the ecclesiastical foundations, touching also on economic, political and moral motives in their criticism of the Catholic Church.
