The book "Letters on the Spiritual Life" contains a biography of Szygumen John and a collection of all the letters of the elder preserved in the Valaam Monastery in Finland and by his spiritual friends. This edition is supplemented with new photographs, bibliographic data of contemporaries and letters of the elder that have not been published before. Sxyigumen John (Alekseev) was glorified as a saint in the Finnish Orthodox Church in November 2018. Szyhigumen John (Alekseev; 1873-1958), a well-known ascetic of faith and piety, spent almost his entire life in a monastery. From 1921 he was abbot of the Trifono-Pechenga Monastery, from the leadership of which he was released on his own petition in 1931 and returned to Valaam. From 1932-1937 he was abbot of St. John the Baptist Monastery. - In 1932-1937 he was abbot of the St. John the Baptist Skete, where he received the great schema in the spring of 1933. For the last twenty years of his life he was the confessor of the Valaam Monastery in Finland. Father John was not a highly educated man. However, in the letters of the elder, addressed to different people - both to those who do not believe and have not yet come to God, and to believers, church-going, living a spiritual life - one can see an undoubted literary talent, tact, sense of humor, and most importantly - evangelical simplicity.
