Robert Watt (1837–1894) was a Danish journalist, traveler, writer, and translator, a longtime correspondent of Hans Christian Andersen. After returning from Australia, Watt traveled to St. Petersburg in the autumn of 1866 to cover the arrival in Russia of Princess Dagmar, the future Empress Maria Feodorovna, wife of Alexander III, for a Danish newspaper.

However, Watt devoted most of his reports to describing Russian life itself, the sights of the ceremonial capital and the "great hinterland," the everyday life and habits of its inhabitants, and character traits he found typical (in his remarks, for example, on the word "must" or the precision that "distinguishes everything in Russia").

Published in Russian for the first time, "Letters from Russia" are not only travel essays but also a historical source, recreating St. Petersburg and Moscow in the mid-19th century through the eyes of a foreigner.
