A book by historical scholar A. G. Ragunshteyn explores a little-known aspect of the American Revolution (1775-1783). In their attempt to suppress the independence movement, the British authorities had no idea what a genie they had unleashed. The Americans quickly realized they had gained the legal right to plunder British merchants at sea, under the guise of letters of marque. During the American Revolutionary War, thousands of British merchant ships fell victim to privateers, who quickly acquired the aura of patriots in America, but became pirates and fiends for the British. American "gentlemen of fortune" operated off the coast of the United States, in the Caribbean, and even off the coast of England. The Royal Navy's attempts to suppress privateering were unsuccessful. The profits from this trade were so great that they attracted tens of thousands of sailors. Some of them managed to make a fortune through sea robbery and turned into real heroes and very wealthy people.
