"Peony Lantern" is an early and one of the best works of Sanyutei Entyo (1839-1900). The name "Sanyutei" (the author's real name was Izubuchi Jirokichi) denoted membership in a particular school of "rakugo" - storytellers who gathered audiences in stalls or on the street and, with little or no props, created works at the intersection of literature and theater. Sanyutei Entyo was an outstanding rakugoka who also wrote his own stories. The Peony Lantern is set in the 18th century, but is rooted in an ancient legend about the ghost of a woman wandering around with a lantern like a peony flower in search of her unfaithful lover. However, Sanyutei Entyo transforms a common horror story into a tale of gold's power over man that is scary in its authenticity. The protagonist of the story, Kosuke, an impeccable example of samurai loyalty to duty and lord, unbeknownst to himself turns out to be the "blood-brother" of his adored lord. As immutable as the peculiar tenets of samurai ethics are, when applied directly to reality, they take on a character hardly more phantasmagoric than the shenanigans of ghosts and werewolves.
