Alexander Kazantsev's legendary first novel, "The Burning Island," was first published by Pionerskaya Pravda (October 22–December 28, 1940; February 3–March 13, 1941), followed by Detgiz in 1941 with illustrations by E. Rachev—literally just days before the outbreak of war. The novel was later revised three times. But Kazantsev's literary authority grew from this first version, completely unknown today. Prestige Book Publishing House has decided to publish two versions of the famous novel under a single cover—the 1940 edition with illustrations by L. Smekhov and the 1957 edition with illustrations by G. Makarov. This unique volume is a tribute to the writer's memory, marking the 120th anniversary of his birth. The book is addressed primarily to connoisseurs of collectible Soviet science fiction.
