Nikolai Zhivotov was a journalist, civil servant, publisher, and writer. Almost forgotten today, in the late 19th century, he became a landmark author for new, unsophisticated readers from the lower classes, recognizing the need for vivid texts about familiar issues and everyday realities. Zhivotov's vivid text portraits of St. Petersburg profiles are complemented by illustrations taken from popular magazines of the time. These artist-reporters conveyed the ordinary, informal, and unofficial life of pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg more accurately than any photograph, and the portrait of Nikolai Zhivotov himself emerges from the extensive research of Lev Lurye and Vera Garmanova.
