Ivan Alekseevich Bunin, a distinguished member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1909) and Nobel Prize laureate (1933), continued the traditions of the great Russian literature of the nineteenth century in the twentieth century. Pain over the destruction of patriarchal-noble Russia and a sense of the inevitable tragedy of human existence permeate all of Bunin's work. The master's polished prose carries a tremendous charge of sadness, but a light and not inconsolable sadness, for it always speaks of love. Love for a lost, changed homeland, love for disappointed hope, love for a woman—love as a quality of the soul and the meaning of its existence. This volume includes short stories from 1887-1904, as well as poems from 1917-1938.
