In Japanese literature, Izumi Kyōka (1873-1939) was a solitary figure. At a time when his contemporaries were fascinated by European realism, he composed exceptionally cinematic stories, turning exclusively to traditional motifs: a perilous journey through a mountain pass, the double suicide of a loving couple, a chance companion, a vengeful ghost, a temple abbot, a beauty, a traveler, a mirage...
His attention to the shadowy, the otherworldly, and the shimmering, his innovative language, his eccentric nature, and his sincere devotion to a single idea allowed Izumi Kyōka to create his own world—fragile, solitary, and so bizarre that it could have neither followers nor imitators.

"Song by the Light of Lanterns" presents to Russian readers for the first time a selection of the writer's stories and novellas, translated from Japanese by Ekaterina Ryabova, as well as poems translated by Lena Baibikova. The publication is adorned with black-and-white illustrations by Komura Settai (1887-1940), a close friend of the writer.
