The plot of the book is based on ancient Celtic myths about changelings. Substitutes, according to legend, are creatures that are left to parents by evil forces to replace kidnapped human children.
The heroine of the book is a girl named Theresa (Triss). She has a mom, a dad, and a sister Penelope. A perfect seeming family, a perfect seeming home.... Everything seems to be fine, except one day Triss wakes up and feels that she is "out of sorts". Her head is like absorbent cotton, she wants to eat all the time, her sister looks at her with hatred and calls her "fake", dolls and mannequins talk to her.... Parents try to explain the strangeness of the usual fever. But Triss realizes it's not that simple. Is she out of her mind? Or is she really not real? One day she overhears a conversation from which she learns that the "real" Theresa has been kidnapped, and she is just a substitute doll made up of twigs, leaves, and diaries from the kidnapped Triss. The changelings can only live for 7 days, and then what? Doom? Theresa needs to find out in order to save herself.
