The story is told on behalf of Patroclus, son of Menetius, who, after accidentally killing a boy, was forced into exile as a child. Thus he finds himself at the court of Peleus in Phthia, where he meets the prince Achilles. Between the two young men begins a friendship, gradually growing into love. This turns out to be extremely dissatisfied with Achilles' willful and despotic mother, the sea goddess Thetis. Now the two lovers must confront the cunning gods who pursue their own goals, the all-powerful rulers who gradually draw the Greek world into the Trojan War, and the inevitable doom in the form of a dark prophecy hanging over Achilles.
