Vasily Nikiforov-Volgin's book "On Foot to Heaven" includes childhood stories published during the writer's lifetime in the collections "Birthday Earth" and "The Traveling Staff," as well as stories from various years not included in these publications. The book includes footnotes explaining church terms, dialectal and obsolete words and expressions, and is illustrated with original drawings.

Vasily Akimovich Nikiforov-Volgin was one of the most prominent writers of the Russian diaspora in the 1920s and 1930s. His works occupy a distinct place in literature. A deeply religious man, Nikiforov-Volgin focused on the fate of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In his stories, he recreates the traditions and customs of the Russian village, lost during the Revolution. One of the main themes of his work is the changes occurring in the human soul under the extreme conditions of the tragic and turbulent 20th century. Readers are presented with a series of amazing images of Russian people: repentant criminals, dispossessed priests, beggars and saints who walk across the earth-birthday, merging with Heaven.
