In his novel "Caves of a Thousand Buddhas," the renowned Japanese writer Yasushi Inoue (1907–1991) attempts to unravel the mystery of the origins of Buddhist scrolls buried centuries ago in grottoes at the foot of Mingsha Mountain near the city of Dunhuang in western China and discovered by archaeologists only in the early 20th century.

Zhao Xingde, a loyal subject of the Song Dynasty, accidentally saved a young Tangut woman from death and received from her a gift containing unfamiliar symbols. Thus, the enlightened Han Chinese first encountered the writing of Western Xia—a Tangut state at war with China—and his desire to decipher these mysterious symbols plunged him into the maelstrom of wars and political passions raging in Central Asia in the 11th century.
