On January 4, 1960, Albert Camus died in a car accident. His travel bag was found in the wreckage, containing a draft of his novel, The First Man. Thirty-four years after the author's death, the book, edited by the writer's daughter, Catherine Camus, was published.

The novel, essentially autobiographical, is dedicated to Camus's mother: "To you, who will never be able to read this book"—she, indeed, could not have read it, being illiterate.

The novel's protagonist, Jacques Cormery, seeking to rekindle memories of his father, who died during the First World War, travels to Algeria, where he spent his childhood in poverty, a childhood he survived thanks to the love of his silent and illiterate mother and a teacher who transformed his worldview. This story offers insight into the formation of Camus's personality and views, and a key to understanding the themes underlying his work.
