After centuries of virtual isolation and the forced opening of Japanese ports as a result of the Perry Expedition, the shoguns made the unprecedented decision in 1862 to send an official delegation to China by sea. They dispatched the ship Senzaimaru to Shanghai to study contemporary trade and diplomatic conditions in that multicultural city. The Japanese embarked on the voyage with a British crew and spent ten weeks in China, interacting with Chinese and representatives of Western powers. This was the first official contact between China and Japan in several centuries.
