In the mid-1840s, the Prussian fleet consisted of one sailing corvette and two gunboats. The war with Denmark in 1848 and the subsequent blockade of the Baltic Sea proved to the then German government that it was impossible to do without naval forces. The beginning of the construction of the country's steam navy can be attributed to this time.
The first shipbuilding program was submitted to the Reichstag for consideration only in 1867.
According to the program, the fleet was to consist of 16 armored ships, 20 corvettes, 8 avisos, 22 gunboats and 2 training and artillery ships.
The rapid development of naval technology, and especially the new position occupied by Germany in the world political arena, revealed the inadequacy of naval forces even more, so already five years after the presentation of the first program - in 1872 - the second was developed.
And both programs were successfully implemented.
By the end of the 1880s, the German armored fleet consisted of 7 frigates (Grosser Kurfürst, König Wilhelm, Friedrich Karl, Kronprinz, Kaiser, Deutschland, Preussen, Friedrich der Grosse), 6 corvettes (Hansa, Oldenburg, four of the Saxe type) and 13 gunboats.
Germany had firmly taken its place among the first maritime powers.
