First Punic War

The First Punic War was destined to forever remain in the shadow of Rome's second war with Carthage. The naval battles of Mylae and Ecnomus, the grand land battles of Panormus and Bagradas, were forgotten amid Hannibal's brilliant victories at Trebbia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae. Despite this, the First Punic War was one of the largest military confrontations of the ancient world, lasting twenty-three years. It is no wonder that the second-century BC Greek historian Polybius speaks clearly and unequivocally: it is the First Punic War that is the most emblematic war between the two superpowers of antiquity. The fighting in this war unfolded in Sicily and Africa. Thousands of armies clashed on the battlefield, and vast fleets perished in naval battles and from the ravages of the elements. The scales constantly swung back and forth, and no one could predict whose side would prevail.
