"Every literary work, if it's worth anything, is like a nesting doll. Inside the large, visible mother doll, the plot, are hidden other dolls. The more of them, the more layered the book, the more interesting it is. Based on this conviction, I wrote stories about Erast Fandorin. I crammed them with all sorts of nesting dolls!
Most readers were quite content with the "external doll," and as an author, that suited me just fine. However, while preparing the series for reprint, I reread it all, recalling the behind-the-scenes mechanics of each novel, story, and novella. Why a given text was written (and each time, I had some personal motive). From what rubbish it grew. What prototypes lie behind
the characters. Literary and historical allusions—obvious and not so obvious. Jokes I used to amuse myself. So much more. And I wanted to tell about it all.
The new edition of the series added a chapter titled "Decoding" to each of the fifteen volumes.
As soon as the expanded edition began publication, readers began demanding that the "decodings" be released as a single book—because they already had Fandorin's books on their shelves, and they couldn't throw them away. So this book is an appendix to "The Adventures of Erast Fandorin" (Boris Akunin).
