In the second part, the story of the sailing-screw frigates of the Russian Empire continues. At the end of the Crimean War, in order to renew the fleet as soon as possible by steam ships of a new generation, the frigates Peresvet and Oleg were laid down in Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg, and the latter was built instead of a steam-powered battleship, the efficiency of which was recognized as less than frigates. So the class of screw frigates began to prevail over the traditional, albeit converted, sailing battleship.
A special role was played by the order of a new class ship, the frigate Svetlana, in France. Yesterday's enemies fully justified the expectations of the Navy. "Svetlana" on the fortress of the building left far behind the frigates of domestic construction. Founded in 1856, Svetlana, having survived several timberovy and rearmament, was excluded from the lists only in 1892.
The frigates had a busy service, from the Mediterranean Sea to the ports of Japan and even visits to the United States, but the fatal battering ram of the Kremlin overtook Oleg in good weather and in the native Baltic.
The book is illustrated with numerous drawings, photographs and reproductions of paintings.
