It's common knowledge that the now-vanished days of sailing not only left behind numerous literary works but also gave rise to an equal number of legends that persist to this day. One such legend holds that if, during the worst storm threatening to destroy a ship, a sail or a cloud resembling one appears on the horizon, both vessel and crew will be saved and return to their home port. It's the autumn of 1941. German troops are already approaching Sevastopol. The crew of a Soviet torpedo boat receives a secret mission: to pick up a scout carrying a vital report from the enemy-occupied coast and deliver it to the city. But the sailors are ambushed, and only the young Chief Petty Officer Alexei Nikitin survives. It is to him that the wounded scout entrusts the cargo for which he risked his life—an antique key tied to a grenade. The story of what this unusual mission turned out to be for Alexei and his friends is told in the novel by the remarkable writer and sailor Viktor Rozhkov, who went through the entire Great Patriotic War and one day saw his "sail on the horizon."
