Prospera Island is one of three islands in a small archipelago, lost in the vastness of the ocean and isolated from the rest of the world and humanity - or what is left of it.
The population of the island lives in a privileged position. They are looked after by auxiliary personnel living in cramped conditions on a neighboring island, and when the inhabitants of Prospera reach old age, they are sent to a third island - the Nursery, where their bodies are reborn anew, the memories of their past lives are erased, and the old people return to Prospera again, rejuvenated.
Proctor Bennett is a ferryman. His job is to deliver people to the Nursery. He never doubted the usefulness of his work until one day, while ferrying his own father, he heard him say: "This world is not that world." What do these words mean?
