The millennia-long culture of Byzantium is a significant chapter in world civilization. On the one hand, it is a continuation of classical culture, and on the other, the birth of medieval culture. Originating from Greek roots, Byzantine writing came into contact with all the great cultures of its time: Georgian, Armenian, Slavic, Arabic, and Persian. Elements of these cultures were reflected in the literature, poetry, art, and science of Byzantium. This collection of translations of Byzantine authors, compiled by leading Russian philologists, represents an attempt to present the evolution of the ecclesiastical and secular genres of Byzantine literature from the 4th to the 15th centuries inclusively, in the most comprehensive and chronological manner.

This collection was compiled using works that have achieved worldwide renown, reflecting the continuity of classical traditions and the most characteristic moments of internal genre and linguistic changes, thus providing the most complete understanding of the stages of the development of Byzantine literature. During the preparation of this reprint, typos, terminological, factual, and bibliographical inaccuracies were corrected.

The publication is illustrated with color images of Byzantine art and can be used in higher education institutions and is also intended for a general readership.
