German historian, professor of theology, biblical scholar, translator, Hebraist, author of works on the history of ancient Judea and early Christianity Oskar Holtzmann first published his fundamental work "The Fall of the Jewish State" in 1888.

The proposed work is part of a large-scale project on general history, published by the German scholar W. Oncken. Holtzmann's impartiality and independence in covering the events described largely compensate for some of the shortcomings of the text's presentation. In 1899, the book was translated into Russian, as it has serious scientific value and is one of the most authoritative studies of the 19th century on the ancient history of the Jewish people. In Russia, the famous philologist and orientalist G.G. Haeckel worked on its text. The author narrates the era of the Second Temple from the 3rd century BC to the First Jewish War (6671). The publication presents the most important aspects of the life of the Jewish people in the Middle East.
