The people loved him. Monarchs hated him. He was driven from the country. Processions were held in his honor. Victor Hugo is one of the most famous figures of the 19th century, one of the most prominent figures of French Romanticism. American and European critics tore his epic novel Les Misérables to shreds, but readers were thrilled by its veracity. Alexander II banned the book from being published in Russia, and Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky, without consulting each other, called it the greatest work of the century. To this day, the novel remains one of the most published books in the world, alongside the Bible and Plato's Dialogues.

In the first volume of Les Misérables, the reader meets the main characters. One of them, Jean Valjean, is at first glance an unremarkable pauper, embittered against the entire world. He spent most of his life in penal servitude for trying to feed his sister's hungry children with stolen bread.

The second volume of the novel takes place on the eve of the June Uprising in France. Jean Valjean raises the orphan Cosette while hiding from the brutal justice system. And yet, the outcast still strives to find happiness...
