He was loved by the people. He was hated by the monarchs. He was chased out of the country. He was honored by processions. Victor Hugo is one of the most famous personalities of the XIX century, one of the most prominent figures of French romanticism. American and European critics panned his epic "Les Miserables", but readers were delighted by its truthfulness. Alexander II banned the book in Russia, and Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky, without collusion, called it the greatest work of the century. The novel remains one of the most published books in the world today, along with the Bible and Plato's Dialogues.

In the first volume of "Les Miserables" the reader gets acquainted with the main characters. One of them, Jean Valjean, - at first glance unremarkable poor man, embittered at the whole world. He spent most of his life on penal servitude for trying to feed his sister's hungry children with stolen bread.

In the second volume of the novel, the action takes place on the cusp of the June Uprising in France. Jean Valjean raises the orphan Cosette, hiding from cruel justice. Also, the outcast is still trying to find happiness....
