Xu Hong is one of China's leading archaeologists and the author of several monographs on various topics in ancient China. This work presents an archaeological description of the development of late Neolithic (Eneolithic) societies on the Central China Plain on the eve of the region's entry into the Bronze Age and the establishment of the earliest and, in the author's opinion, spiritually Chinese state of Erlitou (c. 1900–1500 BC).

In reflecting on the origins of ancient Chinese civilization, Xu Hong relies exclusively on archaeological data, avoiding speculation based on interpretations of traditional historiography. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of artifacts with ritual significance and use, which became part of the ancient Chinese "establishments of ritual propriety and music"—the main distinguishing feature of ancient Chinese civilization.
