The book of L.N. Gumilev is an original study of the history of the emergence, flourishing and disappearance of the Khazar Khaganate - a neighbor and rival of Ancient Russia, who was in the VIII-X centuries in the Volga Delta. Although the sources of Khazar history have been known for a long time and studied very carefully, the opinions of scholars about the culture, language, territory, and way of life of the Khazars were not unanimous.
During the archaeological expeditions organized by the State Hermitage in 1959-1961 (detailed excavations on land and underwater research), a new set of information about the Khazars was obtained. Comparing ancient Russian, Byzantine, Arab, Jewish written sources with the data of archaeological finds and hypotheses of his predecessors who studied Khazar history, L.N. Gumilev gave a new interpretation of the ethnic, religious and state structure of the Khazar Khaganate in different epochs and made original conclusions about the complex of causes of its disappearance: ethno-religious knot of problems, social laws, political contradictions, transgression of the Caspian Sea, etc.
The book about archaeological discoveries in the Caspian Sea is supplemented by a historical and philosophical essay “Zigzag of History” about the history of the Jewish people and the chimeric state created by it, which played an important role in the system of international trade of the early Middle Ages.
The author of the foreword and conclusion to the book by L.N. Gumileva is Professor M.I. Artamonov. The book is equipped with an index of the names of historical persons, an index of the names of researchers and cited authors, an index of geographical names and an index of ethnonyms.
The book is addressed to historians, geographers, philosophers, ethnologists and a wide range of interested readers.
