This book is a new, improved translation of a collection of letters by Elder Ephraim of Philotheou, addressed to his spiritual children—monastics and laypeople. Many of these letters were written by Elder Ephraim during his time in the desert of New Skete and are therefore imbued with the unique spirit of Athonite hesychasm, unceasing prayer, remembrance of death, and contemplation. In his letters, the elder often quotes Saints Isaac the Syrian, John, and Gregory of Sinai almost verbatim. References to these great fathers of monasticism are provided in the footnotes.

Simple in form yet profound and comprehensive in content, slightly poetic and lyrical, imbued with humility and love for God and neighbor, Elder Ephraim's "Father's Instructions" are an excellent practical guide to spiritual work. Referring to these invaluable nuggets of ascetic wisdom will undoubtedly bring great benefit to the reader. For some, the "Instructions" will become support and consolation, for others, enlightenment and edification, and for others, a discovery, the beginning of a new path - the path to God.
