As a rule, biographies of recently departed classics are written by their apologists, who are generous with spruces and extremely restrained when it comes to clearing the rubble of myths and clichés. However, Yuri Vitalievich Mamleyev was lucky in this sense: he himself, like his associates, was not content with the superficial level of reality and always sought to look beyond it - and so did Eduard Lukoyanov, the author of the first critical biography of Mamleyev. The protagonist of "Father of Shatuns" appears before us not as a monument to himself, but as a living person with all his flaws, obsessions and creative breakthroughs, and his strange retinue - as a community of eerie creatures who, whether we like it or not, have largely determined the features and character of contemporary Russian culture.
