"Fatherland" is a novel by Konstantin Sedykh, author of the celebrated "Dauria." The book covers the events of the final years of the Civil War in Transbaikalia: the expulsion of the invaders, the reunification of the Far Eastern Republic with Russia, and the return of the partisans to civilian life. Frosty winters continue to give way to a blooming spring and a sultry summer, followed by a chilly autumn, but with each passing year it becomes increasingly clear that the old, familiar world has irrevocably vanished—a new one is being born in the fire of battle. In "Fatherland," the reader once again encounters the Ulybin Cossack family. The author focuses not on the fate of the older brother, Roman, but on the younger brother, Ganka: a teenager who joined a partisan detachment and, "like a leaf torn from a tree, was swept away and carried away by the current of an incomprehensible, menacing life."
